Where it came from
Cruel is a front card from the 2022 Jumpstart set, a product line designed by Wizards of the Coast to facilitate quick, randomized gameplay by combining two distinct themed decks. Released in late 2022, these cards act as the aesthetic and thematic anchor for their respective packs, featuring vibrant, anime-inspired illustrations that marked a deliberate departure from traditional Magic: The Gathering art styles.
The art for this card was created by Makkusu, an artist whose style reflects the set's broader initiative to embrace varied, contemporary creative influences. By utilizing a distinct visual language distinct from the game's core high-fantasy aesthetic, the Jumpstart 2022 series aimed to appeal to both long-time players and fans of modern animation, solidifying the card as a notable piece of the game's recent experimental design history.
