Unlucky Thirteen

Unlucky Thirteen was released in 2022 as part of the Jumpstart 2022 expansion for Magic: The Gathering. This card functions as a theme card, serving as the front face for a deck designed around the number thirteen, a concept rooted in the game's long-standing affinity for high-variance, gothic-themed mechanics. The set was created to facilitate quick, randomized gameplay by combining pre-constructed half-decks, with this specific card acting as an identifier for the pack's contents.

The card was illustrated by Wisnu Tan, who opted for a macabre, surreal aesthetic to match the thematic focus on superstition and misfortune. The design deliberately leans into the lore of Innistrad, the plane of existence most associated with the number thirteen, utilizing dark, moody tones to evoke a sense of unease. Upon release, the set was well-received by players for its ability to provide a balanced limited-format experience, and this card became a distinct collector's item for those pursuing the complete set of unique front-facing art cards.
