What it does

Whenever you cast an instant or sorcery spell from your hand, manifest the top card of your library. (Put that card onto the battlefield face down as a 2/2 creature. Turn it face up any time for its mana cost if it's a creature card.)

Whenever a face-down creature you control dies, exile it if it's an instant or sorcery card. You may cast that card until the end of your next turn.

Provenance

Where it came from

Cryptic Pursuit was released as a promotional card for the Magic: The Gathering set Streets of New Capenna, which debuted in 2022. The set is themed around a 1920s-inspired art deco metropolis ruled by five distinct demon-led crime families. This particular card was designed as a support piece for the Commander format, featuring mechanics that reflect the set's focus on resource management and card advantage within a flavorful, urban crime noir aesthetic.

The card’s visual design is rooted in the opulent, geometric style that defines the New Capenna plane, emphasizing themes of mystery and calculated risk. Like many cards in the Commander promo cycle, this version features unique border treatments or holographic stamps that distinguish it from standard set releases. It was received as a functional tool for decks focused on spellcasting and graveyard synergy, fitting into the broader initiative to provide players with stylized, collectible versions of foundational cards.
