What it does

Whenever you cast an instant or sorcery spell from your hand, manifest the top card of your library. (Put that card onto the battlefield face down as a 2/2 creature. Turn it face up any time for its mana cost if it's a creature card.)

Whenever a face-down creature you control dies, exile it if it's an instant or sorcery card. You may cast that card until the end of your next turn.

Provenance

Where it came from

Cryptic Pursuit was released in 2022 as part of the Streets of New Capenna Commander set, a collection themed around a 1920s-inspired art deco metropolis ruled by five demon-led crime families. The set's aesthetic draws heavily from noir cinema and jazz-age architecture, grounding the card's mechanics in the flavor of detective work and clandestine operations within the city's corrupt underworld.

The card was illustrated by Marc Simonetti, a prolific fantasy artist known for his dramatic lighting and intricate environmental storytelling. His design for Cryptic Pursuit leans into the set's hard-boiled atmosphere, utilizing shadows and cinematic framing to evoke the tension of a stakeout. The piece was received as a functional, flavor-forward addition to blue-aligned control decks, fitting well into the set's overarching narrative of secrets and tactical maneuverability.
