Where it came from
Cephalid Facetaker was released as part of the promotional suite for the New Capenna Commander expansion. This card represents a specific subset of the Cephalid creature type, updated for the aesthetic themes of the plane of New Capenna, which blends 1920s Art Deco influences with high-fantasy tropes. The card functions as a clone effect, reflecting the thematic emphasis on disguise, infiltration, and the intricate social hierarchies prevalent in the set's organized crime families.
The illustration was crafted by artist Donato Giancola, who has been a consistent contributor to the Magic: The Gathering visual identity. His approach for this piece focuses on the fluid, uncanny anatomy of the Cephalid race, utilizing the distinct, opulent color palettes associated with the Streets of New Capenna aesthetic. It was received by players as a mechanically efficient utility card, noted for its versatility in copying the most impactful creatures on the battlefield.
