Where it came from
The Cephalid Facetaker was released in 2022 as part of the Streets of New Capenna Commander set. It depicts a cephalid, a long-established creature type in Magic: The Gathering lore, re-imagined within the art deco, prohibition-era aesthetic of the New Capenna plane. This specific card was designed to highlight the set's focus on corruption and identity-shifting, mechanics that allow players to copy powerful creatures on the battlefield.
The illustration was crafted by artist Caio Monteiro, who leaned into the noir-inspired styling of the set. By giving the cephalid the appearance of a sophisticated, high-stakes manipulator, Monteiro captured the atmosphere of the Grixis-aligned factions within New Capenna. Upon its release, the card was received as a functional, flavorful inclusion for blue-black control decks, noted by players for its thematic consistency with the set's urban crime motif.
