Where it came from
Curse of Surveillance was released in 2021 as part of the Innistrad: Midnight Hunt expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed as part of a cycle of 'Cursed' enchantments, a recurring mechanic within the game that represents a magical hex placed upon an opponent. The set draws heavy inspiration from gothic horror, specifically the atmosphere of classic werewolf folklore and rural, autumnal superstition.
The card was illustrated by Johannes Voss, a long-time contributor to the game known for his vibrant, expressive style. In this piece, Voss focused on the uncanny nature of being watched, utilizing themes of paranoia and spectral observation to fit the set's haunting narrative. Upon its release, it was noted for its utility in Commander format play, where its ability to grant card draw based on the enchanted player's actions made it a popular choice for deck-building.
