Where it came from
Tovolar's Huntmaster was introduced in the 2021 Magic: The Gathering set Innistrad: Midnight Hunt. The card reflects the set's thematic return to a Gothic horror aesthetic, centering on the lore of werewolves and the struggle for balance within the world of Innistrad. As a double-faced card, it serves as a mechanical centerpiece for tribal werewolf decks, embodying the transformation trope that has defined the plane's lycanthrope identity since its original debut in 2011.
The artwork for this card was created by illustrative artist Johannes Voss, who utilized a moody, atmospheric color palette to distinguish between Tovolar's human and transformed states. The design was crafted to highlight Tovolar’s role as a leader of the werewolf packs, emphasizing both his tactical command and his primal rage. Upon release, the card was widely received by the community as a significant upgrade to werewolf-focused strategies, cementing its status as a staple for players who enjoy synergy-heavy gameplay.
