What it does

Each opponent sacrifices a creature or planeswalker of their choice, then discards a card. You return a creature or planeswalker card from your graveyard to your hand, then draw a card.

When you cast a Bolas planeswalker spell, exile this card from your graveyard. That planeswalker enters with an additional loyalty counter on it.

Provenance

Where it came from

Dark Intimations was released in 2017 as part of the Aether Revolt set for Magic: The Gathering. As a rare sorcery card, it was designed to mechanically reflect the growing tension and eventual political fallout within the storyline of the plane of Kaladesh, specifically highlighting the influence of the dragon planeswalker Nicol Bolas. The card's design process focused on high-mana value effects that interact with planeswalkers, serving as a narrative bridge between the Aether Revolt block and the subsequent Amonkhet expansion.

The artwork for this particular promo version was crafted to emphasize the ominous aesthetic associated with Bolas's machinations. Illustrators working on these supplemental promo cycles often lean into atmospheric, darker palettes to distinguish them from standard set cards, aiming to convey a sense of looming threat. Upon its release, the card was received by players as a specialized tool for competitive formats like Commander, valued for its ability to both recur resources and provide board control, cementing its status as a sought-after piece for players building Grixis-colored decks.
