Where it came from
The Freejam Regent was released as part of the Aether Revolt set in early 2017, serving as a rare promotional card for Magic: The Gathering. As a 'Buy-a-Box' promotional card, it was distributed to game stores to incentivize players to purchase full booster boxes upon the set's release. The design draws on the industrial, steampunk-inspired aesthetic of Kaladesh, a plane defined by its reliance on a magical energy source known as Aether.
The card was illustrated by Johannes Voss, a long-time contributor to the game known for his expressive, light-filled style. Voss designed the Regent to evoke the imposing scale of the automaton creatures central to the set's narrative, focusing on the mechanical complexity and the vibrant, glowing artifice that characterizes the plane of Kaladesh. The card was well-received by players for its thematic integration and its distinct foil treatment, which highlights the metallic details of the illustration.
