Where it came from
Thalakos Drifters was released in 1998 as part of the Exodus expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, this set was the third and final installment in the Rath Cycle. The card depicts a member of the Thalakos, a race of shadowy, phased beings native to the artificial plane of Rath, designed to emphasize the game's evolving mechanics regarding creature evasion and combat displacement.
The illustration was provided by artist Dan Dos Santos, who captured the ethereal, haunting quality of the race through a muted palette and fragmented anatomy. Upon its release, the card was notable for the shadow mechanic, which effectively isolated creatures from traditional combat interactions. While it remains a niche card in competitive play, it is frequently cited by collectors for its atmospheric art and its role in defining the visual identity of the Rath plane.
