Thalakos Drifters

Thalakos Drifters was released in 1998 as part of the Exodus set, the final installment of the Rath Cycle in the Magic: The Gathering card game. The set was designed to introduce complex mechanics and darker, more atmospheric art styles to the game, reflecting the narrative of the Phyrexians' impending invasion of the plane of Rath. As a shadow creature, the card represents the Thalakos, a displaced race of spirits or phase-shifted beings who dwell in the periphery of reality, unable to be touched by those in the material world.

The card's illustration was crafted by Andrew Robinson, a prolific artist for the game during this era known for his evocative and often eerie character designs. Robinson utilized a muted color palette and soft, ghostly brushwork to emphasize the 'shadow' mechanic, which prevents the creature from being blocked by or interacting with non-shadow entities.
