Where it came from
Dauthi Voidwalker was introduced in the 2021 Magic: The Gathering set Modern Horizons 2, a product line specifically engineered for the Modern format. The set focused on high-power cards that pay homage to historical lore, drawing deep from the game's past to create mechanically complex tools. This card references the Dauthi, a shadow-dwelling race originally appearing in the 1997 Tempest expansion, re-contextualizing their thematic evasion and void-related abilities into a modern competitive framework.
The art was crafted by illustrator Dominik Mayer, whose signature style features high-contrast geometry and a dramatic, somber color palette. Mayer intended to emphasize the Voidwalker’s ethereal nature, depicting the entity as a shifting, planar presence that transcends the boundary between the living world and the graveyard. Upon its release, the card was immediately recognized by the competitive community for its utility, quickly becoming a staple in various formats due to its ability to disrupt graveyard-reliant strategies while offering a unique resource-denial effect.
