Where it came from
Dauthi Voidwalker was introduced in the 2021 Magic: The Gathering set Modern Horizons 2. It represents the return of the Dauthi, a shadow-dwelling race from the plane of Rath, first seen during the 1997 Tempest expansion. The card was designed to function as a powerful disruption tool for black-aligned decks, effectively weaponizing the graveyard against opponents by exiling cards that would otherwise enter the graveyard and allowing the controller to play them later.
The artwork was illustrated by Games Workshop artist Johan Grenier, who emphasized the eerie, translucent aesthetic associated with the Dauthi. The design intended to evoke the 'shadow' mechanic from original sets while updating it for modern power levels. Upon release, the card was widely received as a staple in competitive formats like Modern and Legacy, praised for its versatility as both a graveyard hoser and a potential source of card advantage.
