Where it came from
Dauthi Voidwalker was introduced in the 2021 Magic: The Gathering set Modern Horizons 2, a product designed specifically to inject powerful, nostalgic mechanics into the Modern format. The card represents the Dauthi, a race of shadow-dwelling beings from the plane of Rath, first appearing in the 1997 Tempest expansion. This new iteration was crafted to provide black-aligned decks with a disruptive tool capable of both exiling opponent cards and enabling the casting of stolen spells, effectively functioning as a high-impact utility creature.
The artwork for this specific promotional version was created by illustrator Randy Vargas. Known for his evocative digital style, Vargas depicted the Voidwalker emerging from a rift with a sleek, menacing aesthetic that leans into the shadowy, ethereal nature of the Dauthi. Upon release, the card was widely praised by competitive players for its efficiency and unique ability to interact with graveyards, quickly becoming a staple in various tournament formats.
