Where it came from
Daze was originally released in the 1999 Nemesis expansion for Magic: The Gathering, designed as a free counterspell that required players to return an Island to their hand as an additional cost. The card was conceived during a period when Wizards of the Coast was experimenting with mechanics that rewarded tempo-based play, effectively allowing control decks to protect their threats while tapped out. Its original design by Mike Elliott sought to balance powerful interaction with a meaningful drawback, cementing its status as a staple in various constructed formats.
The version included in Mystery Booster 2, marked as collector number 26, is a functional reprint that features the card's original mechanical identity. Mystery Booster 2 is a curated experience designed by the Wizards R&D team to celebrate the history of the game through a mix of iconic reprints and playful 'playtest' designs. By reintroducing Daze in this context, the set serves as both a nod to the card's enduring legacy in eternal formats and an opportunity for players to engage with its classic tactical utility in a draft-focused environment.
