Where it came from
Daze was originally released as a common card in the 2000 Nemesis expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed to provide blue control decks with a low-cost, tempo-based countermeasure, allowing players to negate an opponent's spell by returning an island to their hand. Its inclusion in the 2000 World Championship Decks allowed players to field copies identical to those used by top-tier tournament competitors, featuring the distinctive gold-bordered styling and commemorative back that signified their origin as part of a pre-constructed deck replicating a finalist's list.
The 2000 World Championship Deck series serves as a historical document of the competitive landscape at the turn of the millennium. By featuring tournament-legal card lists and the signatures of the professional players who wielded them, these decks offered enthusiasts a glimpse into the prevailing strategies of the era. The inclusion of Daze in these decks highlights the card's enduring relevance in the game's competitive history, where its unique cost-avoidance mechanic remains a foundational element of blue-aligned play.
