Where it came from
The Tocatli Honor Guard was released as a promotional card for the Magic: The Gathering set Ixalan, which debuted in late 2017. As part of the Ixalan promos, this specific card was distributed through organized play events, intended to reward participants with a unique foil version of a card that emphasizes the set's central theme of exploration and tribal conflict. The design reflects the aesthetic of the Sun Empire, a Mesoamerican-inspired faction within the game, blending ornate, golden armor with the stoic, disciplined nature of the unit's mechanical function.
The card was illustrated by Johannes Voss, a prominent artist in the Magic: The Gathering community known for his atmospheric and detailed style. Voss aimed to capture the imposing presence of the Honor Guard, emphasizing the rigid posture and intricate regalia that characterize the soldiers protecting the city of Orazca. Upon its release, the card gained significant traction in competitive formats, particularly for its ability to nullify the entering-the-battlefield effects of other creatures, making it a staple for players looking to disrupt complex strategic interactions.
