Where it came from
Defend the Campus is an uncommon sorcery card featured in the 2021 Magic: The Gathering set, Strixhaven: School of Mages. The set centers on a magical university divided into five colleges, with this card specifically reflecting the protective, communal values of the Lorehold college, which focuses on historical research and spirit-binding. It was designed to provide players with a versatile tool for both defense and board presence, allowing them to place +1/+1 counters on creatures to reinforce a tactical position.
The artwork, illustrated by Wisnu Tan, captures the chaotic and scholarly atmosphere of the campus during a magical conflict. Tan utilized a dynamic perspective to emphasize the protective spellwork in action, aligning with the set's aesthetic goal of blending academic settings with high-fantasy combat. Upon its release, the card was received as a functional, flavor-rich utility piece that effectively encapsulated the set's thematic emphasis on cooperation and institutional loyalty.
