Where it came from
Defenders of Humanity was released in 2022 as part of the Warhammer 40,000 Commander set for Magic: The Gathering. This set marked a significant crossover event between Wizards of the Coast and Games Workshop, designed to integrate the grimdark aesthetic of the 41st millennium into the mechanics of the Commander format. The card itself represents the stalwart Imperial Guard, the backbone of the Imperium of Man, reflecting the flavor of human resilience against the overwhelming horrors of the galaxy.
The card features artwork by Games Workshop, maintaining the visual fidelity of the Warhammer 40,000 source material. It was designed to emphasize the 'token generation' strategy common to white-aligned decks, serving as a tactical representation of the Astra Militarum mobilizing reinforcements to the battlefield. Upon release, the set was widely praised by both Magic and tabletop wargaming communities for its thematic accuracy and for successfully capturing the sense of scale intrinsic to the Warhammer universe.
