Where it came from
Defenders of Humanity was released in 2022 as part of the Warhammer 40,000 Commander set for Magic: The Gathering. This set marked a significant crossover between Wizards of the Coast and Games Workshop, designed to integrate the grim, dystopian aesthetic of the 41st millennium into the mechanics of the Commander format. The card specifically highlights the stoic resilience of the Imperium of Man, focusing on the tactical deployment of soldier tokens.
The art for the card was created by artist Games Workshop, capturing the iconic industrial-gothic visual language associated with the Astra Militarum. The design aims to translate the tabletop wargame's emphasis on overwhelming infantry numbers into a board-state advantage. Upon release, the set was well-received by both Magic players and Warhammer hobbyists for its successful thematic cohesion and ability to represent complex lore through established card mechanics.
