Where it came from
The Island card from the Strixhaven: School of Mages set, specifically collector number 369, was released in April 2021 as part of a series of full-art basic lands. These cards were designed to highlight the unique academic aesthetic of Strixhaven University, a magical institution within the Magic: The Gathering multiverse. This particular design features the iconic, ornate architecture associated with the school’s campus, emphasizing the theme of scholarly pursuit and mystical study.
The art for this cycle of basic lands was commissioned by Wizards of the Coast to immerse players in the prestige and history of the school's five colleges. By utilizing a full-art borderless frame, the illustrators were able to provide a more expansive view of the campus geography. The reception among the player base was positive, with many collectors seeking out these specific versions for their aesthetic appeal and their role in grounding the set's identity within the broader lore of Arcavios.
