Where it came from
Defender of the Queue was released as part of the Mystery Booster 2 set in 2024, a specialized product designed by Wizards of the Coast to celebrate the history and meta-humor of Magic: The Gathering. As a card featuring a silver-border-style design aesthetic, it serves as a self-referential nod to the experience of waiting in long lines at large convention events, which is a common occurrence for players attending Magic gatherings.
The card was designed to function within a supplemental, play-focused environment, utilizing mechanics that break traditional game rules for comedic effect. While it is not legal in standard tournament play, it represents the R&D team's interest in creating ephemeral, nostalgia-driven experiences that resonate with the community's shared social rituals.
