Defiant Salvager

Defiant Salvager was originally printed in the Aether Revolt set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game in 2017. As part of the Kaladesh block, the card reflects the themes of the plane's invention-focused society, depicting a scavenger repurposed for the game's mechanics involving artifacts. The card was specifically designed to utilize the sacrifice mechanic, rewarding players for dismantling their own board state to grow stronger, which fit the aggressive strategy favored by the black-aligned characters in that narrative arc.

The reprint in the 2020 Double Masters set featured the original artwork by Clint Cearley, who utilized a high-contrast style to highlight the gritty, industrial nature of the scavenger. Double Masters was curated as a premium set designed to celebrate the history of the game by bringing back powerful and fan-favorite cards with updated, often more refined print quality. Within this context, the Salvager served as a common-rarity utility piece that helped define the limited environment, balancing the set's high-power ceiling with necessary mechanical synergy.
