Where it came from
Defiant Salvager was released in the 2020 Magic: The Gathering set Commander Legends, a set specifically engineered for the Commander format. It was designed as an uncommon creature that rewards players for sacrificing their own artifacts, leaning into the mechanical identity of Jund-colored decks that gain value from dismantling their own board state. The card serves as a flexible utility piece, allowing players to build up power on a creature while simultaneously triggering death-related synergies.
The art for this card was provided by illustrator Simon Dominic, who focused on depicting a scavenger in the process of reclaiming discarded metal. The visual language of the card fits within the industrial, rugged aesthetic often associated with artifact-heavy themes in the game. Upon its release, it was noted by players as a solid inclusion for budget-friendly Commander decks, praised for its straightforward utility and its ability to scale in strength over the course of a long-form multiplayer game.
