Where it came from
Demonic Hordes was first released in the Limited Edition Alpha and Beta sets of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, later appearing in the Unlimited Edition set in 1994. Designed by Richard Garfield and published by Wizards of the Coast, the card was part of the original core set that introduced the trading card game genre. The card's mechanics reflect the game's early emphasis on high-cost, high-impact spells that could alter the board state, fitting into the dark fantasy aesthetic that defined the initial release.
The artwork for Demonic Hordes was illustrated by Dan Frazier. Frazier, one of the original artists commissioned for the game, leaned into the macabre and gothic themes prevalent in early Magic design. His portrayal of the demonic figure was intended to evoke a sense of overwhelming power and menace, consistent with the card's ability to destroy lands. The art was well-received by early players for its distinct style, which helped establish the visual language of the game's black mana cards.
