Where it came from
Demonic Hordes was originally released in the 1993 Limited Edition Alpha set for Magic: The Gathering, designed by Richard Garfield. As one of the original cards in the game, it was created to capture the high-fantasy aesthetic of the era, featuring art by Douglas Shuler that depicted a swarm of creatures. It functioned as a powerful, costly black card that reflected the game's early focus on summoning formidable threats to dominate the battlefield.
The 30th Anniversary Edition, which includes this version of the card, was released by Wizards of the Coast in 2022 to commemorate three decades of the game. These cards feature a distinct retro frame and a commemorative back, serving as non-tournament legal collectibles for long-time enthusiasts. The design remains faithful to the original 1993 illustration, intentionally preserved to honor the historical visual identity of the game's formative years.
