Where it came from
Demonic Hordes was released in 1993 as part of the Beta set, the second printing of Magic: The Gathering. As a core component of the early game's creature roster, it reflected the high-fantasy aesthetic of the era, serving as a powerful black-aligned threat that utilized the early mechanic of land destruction to mirror the destructive nature of the demons it represented.
The card features iconic artwork by Douglas Shuler, one of the original illustrators for the game. Shuler's design leaned into the gritty, atmospheric style favored by the game's initial art direction, aiming to evoke a sense of overwhelming, malevolent power. While the card is now a relic of the game's balance evolution, it remains a notable piece of history for collectors who value the hand-painted, distinct visual identity of the 1993 Beta release.
