Where it came from
Deranged Assistant was originally introduced in the 2011 Innistrad expansion, designed to evoke the gothic horror themes of that set. The card depicts a classic mad scientist's aide, reinforcing the set's graveyard-centric mechanics where milling oneself represents the character's descent into insanity or obsession. It quickly became a staple in self-mill and reanimator strategies due to its efficient cost and utility.
The Double Masters 2022 version, featuring collector number 45, showcases new artwork by illustrator Ilse Gort. Her design highlights the frenetic, dark aesthetic typical of the set's premium reprints. The card was released as part of a compilation product intended to provide high-value reprints to players, and this specific iteration is noted for its evocative visual style that aligns with the established visual language of the Magic: The Gathering multiverse.
