Where it came from
Smothering Tithe first appeared in the Ravnica Allegiance set released in early 2019, quickly establishing itself as a defining staple of the Commander format. It was designed to represent the oppressive tax-collecting bureaucracy of the Orzhov Syndicate, a guild within the plane of Ravnica that balances religious fervor with ruthless financial extortion. The card's mechanics reflect this flavor by forcing opponents to pay extra mana for drawing cards or allowing the controller to create Treasure tokens, effectively turning the opponents' resource acquisition into the controller's gain.
The Double Masters 2022 version, numbered 31, serves as a premium reprint that features updated frame treatments consistent with the set's high-end aesthetic. As a high-demand card that exerts significant pressure on table dynamics, it is frequently sought by players looking to optimize their decks for multiplayer environments. The artwork for the various iterations of the card generally highlights the macabre, gilded opulence associated with the Orzhov aesthetic, reinforcing its role as a powerful piece of board control that punishes opponents for simply playing the game.
