Where it came from
Derevi, Empyrial Tactician was introduced as one of the face commanders in the Commander 2013 product line, a set designed to expand the popular multiplayer-focused format of Magic: The Gathering. Released during a period where Wizards of the Coast was doubling down on dedicated tabletop support for Commander, the card was crafted to showcase the Bant color identity, emphasizing tactical board manipulation and recurring value rather than raw power.
The character, an aven tactician, was illustrated by artist Mathias Kollros, who leaned into a design that felt both regal and highly strategic to reflect the card's ability to untap permanents and manipulate the board state. Upon release, Derevi became a defining figure in the format, quickly gaining notoriety among players for the unique mechanic that allowed the commander to bypass the traditional command zone tax, a design choice that remains a frequent topic of discussion in competitive community circles.
