Where it came from
Derevi, Empyrial Tactician first appeared in the 2013 Commander set, originating from the Bant-colored 'Nature of the Beast' deck. The card was designed to highlight the flavor of the plane of Alara, specifically the Bant shard, which emphasizes unity and tactical coordination. Its mechanics, which allow players to untap permanents and tap down opponents' resources, were crafted to reflect the character's role as a strategic commander of the avian forces.
The character design was brought to life by illustrator Mathias Kollros, who focused on portraying Derevi as a regal yet formidable tactician. Upon its release, the card quickly became a centerpiece in the Magic: The Gathering Commander format, often cited by players for its high utility and resilience in multiplayer games. It remains a staple for those who enjoy board control strategies and has been reprinted in various formats, including the recent Bloomburrow Commander release, to ensure accessibility for new collectors.
