Where it came from
Derevi, Empyrial Tactician was first released in 2013 as the face of the 'Nature of the Beast' deck for the Commander 2013 product line. Designed by Wizards of the Coast, this card introduced the unique ability to bypass the traditional Commander tax by allowing the player to put Derevi onto the battlefield for a flat cost of four mana from the command zone. This mechanic, combined with her ability to untap permanents upon dealing combat damage, established her as one of the most powerful and resilient commanders in the history of the format.
The Commander Anthology version, released in 2017, featured new frame treatments and updated card aesthetics, consolidating the popularity of the original design into a premium retrospective set. While the original release was polarizing due to the card's perceived oppressive impact on competitive multiplayer gameplay, it remains a defining staple for players who enjoy complex, tempo-oriented strategies. The art, illustrated by Michael Komarck, depicts the avian tactician with a stoic, commanding presence that reflects the character's strategic role within the lore of the Bant shard on Alara.
