Where it came from
Derevi, Empyrial Tactician was introduced as part of the Commander 2013 product line, a yearly release designed to expand the multiplayer format for Magic: The Gathering. Wizards of the Coast released this specific iteration as an oversized card, meant to serve as a decorative or functional display piece for players using Derevi as their commander. The character represents an Aven wizard from the plane of Bant, designed to embody a tactical, tempo-oriented playstyle that rewards players for combat engagement.
The character design was crafted to reflect the knightly, chivalric themes of the Bant shard, featuring avian aesthetics integrated with ornate armor. Within the community, Derevi gained immediate notoriety for an ability set that bypasses traditional casting restrictions, making her a polarizing figure in competitive Commander circles. While the oversized card serves primarily as a visual marker on the table, it remains a notable artifact of the transition period when Wizards of the Coast was actively refining the Commander experience through dedicated preconstructed decks.
