Desert Twister

Desert Twister was originally released in the Arabian Nights expansion in 1993, but it was reprinted in the Fifth Edition core set in 1997. As part of the transition to the refined frame and standardized formatting used in the mid-nineties, this printing maintained the card's function as a versatile removal spell, allowing players to destroy any permanent on the battlefield for a significant mana investment. The Fifth Edition set served as a comprehensive collection designed to introduce newer players to iconic cards from the game's early history.

The artwork for this version was provided by Susan Van Camp, a prolific illustrator during the early years of the game. Her design focused on the visceral, chaotic nature of a desert storm, utilizing a vibrant color palette to distinguish the swirling sand from the arid landscape. While the card is often cited by players for its high mana cost compared to more efficient modern alternatives, the illustration is remembered for capturing the elemental fury associated with the green color identity of the time.
