Where it came from
The Dinosaur token was released in 2024 as part of the token lineup for the Magic: The Gathering expansion set Outlaws of Thunder Junction. The set serves as a genre-blending frontier fantasy, drawing heavily from Western tropes and spaghetti western aesthetic. This token specifically supports cards within the set that generate 3/3 Dinosaur creature tokens, anchoring the mechanical theme of survival and rugged creatures within the rugged, high-noon flavor of the plane.
The illustration was produced by the Wizards of the Coast internal art team to maintain visual consistency across the set's unique landscape. The design focuses on a sturdy, earth-toned aesthetic to match the arid, desert-inspired environment of the Thunder Junction plane. It was well-received by players for its utilitarian design and the way it reinforced the thematic immersion of the set's creature-heavy archetypes.
