Where it came from
The Dinosaur token, identified by collector number 10, was released as part of the ancillary token set for the 2023 Magic: The Gathering expansion, The Lost Caverns of Ixalan. These tokens were designed to support the Commander decks released alongside the main set, specifically to represent the board presence of prehistoric creatures summoned by cards like 'Gishath, Sun's Avatar' or 'Otepec Huntmaster'. The aesthetic continues the vibrant, mesoamerican-inspired visual identity established by the original 2017 Ixalan block.
The artwork for this series was commissioned by Wizards of the Coast to maintain stylistic consistency with the set's high-fantasy jungle theme. The design emphasizes the scale and fierce character of the dinosaurs, utilizing saturated palettes and detailed textures to fit within the game's established mechanical language. As a functional component of the game, these tokens are primarily prized by players for their utility in tracking board states, though they are often sought by collectors who appreciate the set's cohesive world-building and character design.
