Where it came from
Animal Sanctuary was released in 2020 as part of the Core Set 2021 expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As a non-basic land card, it was designed to provide mechanical utility to players running tribal-themed decks centered around specific creature types. The card reflects Wizards of the Coast's ongoing design efforts to reward players for building synergistic decks, specifically offering a way to save and protect creatures by returning them to the hand.
The artwork for this specific promo version was illustrated by Alayna Danner, who has been a frequent contributor to the game. Danner’s aesthetic approach often leans into serene, atmospheric landscapes, and her work on this piece captures a lush, ethereal enclosure intended to evoke a sense of safety and natural refuge. It was well received by the community for its thematic resonance and the utility it offered in the Commander format, where deck-building around creature types is a central pillar of the experience.
