Provenance

Where it came from

Disenchant was originally released as a common in the Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, quickly becoming a staple card for its efficient ability to destroy artifacts and enchantments. By the time it was reprinted for the Mercadian Masques expansion in 1999, the card had been a cornerstone of the game's competitive landscape for six years, serving as a fundamental tool for white-aligned decks to manage board state and counter opposing utility permanents.

The Mercadian Masques printing features artwork by the illustrator Terese Nielsen. Her design for this version departed from the more minimalist aesthetic of earlier printings, opting for a more ornate, mystical depiction that aligned with the high-fantasy, commerce-driven theme of the Mercadian setting. Like many of Nielsen's contributions to the game during this era, the illustration was received positively for its rich color palette and ethereal atmosphere, cementing it as one of the most recognizable versions of the card among longtime players.
