Provenance

Where it came from

The International Collectors' Edition (ICE) Disenchant card was released in 1993 as part of a non-tournament legal boxed set designed for collectors and home play. Produced by Wizards of the Coast, this set featured gold-bordered cards with square corners, intended to give players access to the game's original Alpha and Beta card pool without disrupting the secondary market for tournament-legal cards.

The card art was originally illustrated by Douglas Shuler during the early development of Magic: The Gathering. Shuler's design for Disenchant aimed to visually depict the magical dissolution of an artifact, characterized by the distinct fantasy aesthetic of the game's foundational era. While these cards were initially criticized for their inability to be used in competitive play, they have since become highly regarded artifacts of the game's history due to their unique, high-quality printing process and status as a faithful reprint of the original game experience.
