Where it came from
Divine Visitation was released in 2018 as part of the Guilds of Ravnica set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. It was designed as a rare enchantment representing the celestial influence of the Boros Legion, one of the city-plane's primary factions. The card mechanics, which replace creature tokens with powerful 4/4 flying Angel tokens, were intended to capture the flavor of divine intervention in the heat of battle, emphasizing the game's focus on structured, faction-based warfare.
The artwork for the card was created by artist Mathias Kollros, who sought to evoke a sense of radiant, overwhelming authority consistent with the aesthetic of Ravnica's angels. The piece is characterized by a high-contrast style that emphasizes the transition from mundane followers to divine entities. Upon release, it was well-received by the player base for its ability to drastically alter the board state, quickly becoming a staple in Commander formats and casual token-based strategies.
