Where it came from
Dogged Detective was released as part of the New Capenna Commander set in 2022, a collection designed to reflect the art deco-inspired, mob-ruled city of New Capenna. The card serves as a thematic cornerstone for the set's focus on the underworld syndicates, specifically the Obscura, who rely on information gathering and strategic maneuvering to maintain power in the city's complex social hierarchy.
The card features artwork by Dmitry Burmak, who employed a sharp, stylistic approach to capture the detective character amidst the rain-slicked, noir aesthetic central to the set's identity. Within the game's mechanics, the card is recognized for its ability to return from the graveyard, a design choice intended to mirror the tireless and persistent nature of a noir investigator who refuses to stay down during a case.
