Where it came from
Dogged Detective was released as part of the New Capenna Commander set in April 2022, designed to accompany the Streets of New Capenna expansion. The set draws heavy inspiration from the art deco aesthetic of 1920s noir and organized crime films, focusing on the five criminal families that rule the city of New Capenna. The card reflects the set's central mechanical themes, utilizing the blitz keyword to emphasize the fast-paced, high-stakes nature of the plane's power struggles.
The card was illustrated by Wisnu Tan, who captured the gritty, atmospheric style requested for the set's investigative narrative. The design highlights the trope of the persistent, hard-boiled private eye, utilizing the mechanics of recursion to represent the character's inability to let a case go cold. It was received by players as a functional utility piece for graveyard-focused decks, noted for its thematic alignment with the set's overarching detective motif.
