Provenance

Where it came from

The Dragon token, numbered 8 in the Battle for Zendikar set, was released by Wizards of the Coast in 2015. Tokens in this set were designed to represent summoned creatures created by specific spells or abilities, such as those found on cards like Dragonmaster Outcast. They served as vital gameplay aids for players navigating the high-fantasy, adventure-themed plane of Zendikar, which emphasized exploration and powerful land-based mechanics.

The illustration for this token was created by artist Daarken, known for his work across the Magic: The Gathering franchise. In designing this piece, the objective was to maintain the visual consistency of the set while capturing the visceral, predatory aesthetic of a Zendikar-native dragon. The resulting artwork was well-received by the community for its dynamic composition and contribution to the overall immersive experience of the Battle for Zendikar expansion.
