Where it came from
Dragonback Assault was released in the Tarkir: Dragonstorm expansion, a set that revisits the time-travel narrative of the plane of Tarkir. This card was designed to mechanically represent the visceral, high-stakes dragon-led warfare that defines the plane's lore, emphasizing aggressive combat capabilities and the thematic integration of dragon-kin with their riders.
The artwork was executed by a commissioned fantasy illustrator in the established style of the Magic: The Gathering brand, focusing on dynamic movement and the harsh, desolate landscape of the region. Upon its release, the card was received as a niche utility spell, noted primarily for its specific synergy within tribal decks centered on dragons rather than as a staple of competitive play.
