Where it came from
Dragonback Assault was released as part of the Dragonstorm promotional set for the Magic: The Gathering expansion set Khans of Tarkir. These promotional cards were distributed through various tournament participation incentives and specialized event kits, reflecting the block's focus on the cyclical war between dragon-worshipping clans and the remnants of dragonkind. The card was designed to highlight the high-impact, aggressive mechanics characteristic of the red color alignment in this setting.
The card features artwork by Johannes Voss, whose contribution emphasizes the explosive, pyrotechnic nature of the spell. Voss utilized a dynamic composition to capture the visceral intensity of a dragon-themed assault, aiming to evoke the chaos of a battlefield where ancient, winged predators influence the outcome of mortal conflicts. Upon its release, the card was noted by players for its thematic resonance with the block’s lore, even as its specific tactical utility remained a subject of common discussion in competitive formats.
