Drain Life

Drain Life was originally introduced in the Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, representing the core mechanic of black mana spells that drain vitality from an opponent to fuel the caster. The Revised Edition, released in 1994 as the third core set, featured this card with updated formatting and the iconic, slightly desaturated aesthetic characteristic of the era's print runs. It served as a staple for black-aligned decks, embodying the game's early focus on direct damage and life-gain resource management.

The artwork for this version was illustrated by Douglas Shuler, one of the original artists commissioned by Wizards of the Coast. His rendering sought to capture the grim, visceral nature of necrotic magic through a stark and foreboding visual style. While the Revised Edition is frequently noted by collectors for its distinct, muted color palette compared to its predecessors, the card remained a functional cornerstone of early competitive play, valued for its utility in controlling the board state.
