What it does
As long as this creature is untapped, all damage that would be dealt to you by unblocked creatures is dealt to this creature instead.
Good bodyguards are hard to find, mainly because they don't live long.

Where it came from
Veteran Bodyguard was originally released in the 1994 Revised Edition of Magic: The Gathering. As the third core set of the game, Revised was designed to stabilize the card pool following the rapid growth of the initial releases, serving as a foundational collection for the burgeoning community of players. The card features a cost-efficient defensive ability that allows it to absorb damage directed at the player, reflecting the protective role implied by its name and illustration.
The artwork for the card was provided by Jesper Myhrvold, who captured the stoic and armored appearance typical of high-fantasy sentinels. The design was intended to offer players a reliable, low-cost utility creature, and while it never became a staple of competitive tournament play, it remains a recognized artifact of the game's early identity and the aesthetic sensibilities of the mid-1990s trading card market.
