Drain Life

Drain Life from the Summer Magic set, internally referred to as Edgar, was produced in 1994 as an attempt to correct printing errors found in the Revised Edition of Magic: The Gathering. Wizards of the Coast intended for this limited print run to serve as a corrected set, featuring updated card frames, improved color saturation, and amended text. However, the production suffered from its own unique set of errors, leading to the entire print run being officially discarded and destroyed, save for a small quantity that accidentally entered the secondary market.

The artwork for Drain Life was illustrated by Quinton Hoover, a foundational artist for the early game whose distinct, sweeping style helped define the dark fantasy aesthetic of the period. Hoover’s design for this card emphasized the grim, vampiric nature of the spell, utilizing deep shadows and flowing lines that were intended to pop more vibrantly on the slightly brighter card stock introduced with this set. While the card is functionally identical to its Revised counterpart, its rarity and the technical imperfections of the Edgar print cycle have made it a significant point of interest for historical collectors.
