Drake

The Drake token, numbered 12 in the Commander Masters Tokens set, was released by Wizards of the Coast in 2023. It was designed to serve as a physical representation for game effects that create 2/2 blue creature tokens with flying, a common utility in the Magic: The Gathering Commander format. Tokens in this set were distributed within Commander Masters draft boosters and set boosters to support players utilizing cards like Talrand, Sky Summoner or other spells that populate the battlefield with drake creatures.

The illustration was commissioned from artist Svetlin Velinov, a long-time contributor to the Magic: The Gathering brand known for his clean, dynamic fantasy style. In rendering this creature, Velinov focused on a traditional draconic silhouette, prioritizing clarity and readability to ensure the card remained distinct and useful during the high-complexity board states typical of Commander gameplay. Upon its release, the token was well-received by the community for its high-quality aesthetic and its functional role in standardizing the representation of drake units in play.
