What it does
Menace
Whenever this creature attacks a player, exile all cards from that player's hand, then they draw that many cards. You may play lands and cast spells from among the exiled cards for as long as they remain exiled. If you cast a spell this way, you may spend mana as though it were mana of any color to cast it.

Where it came from
The Elder Brain card was released as part of the promotional offerings for the 2022 Magic: The Gathering expansion, Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate. This set was designed to capture the aesthetic and mechanical essence of the Dungeons & Dragons Forgotten Realms campaign setting, translating iconic monsters like the Elder Brain into the game's tabletop format. The card was specifically crafted to represent the terrifying psychic power of a mind flayer colony's central intellect.
The visual design features the work of illustrator Nils Hamm, who is noted for his distinct, atmospheric style within the Magic: The Gathering universe. Hamm’s depiction of the Elder Brain focuses on the creature's bioluminescent, grotesque anatomy suspended within its briny pool. Upon its release, the card was received well by players who prioritize flavorful card design and high-fantasy art, cementing it as a thematic centerpiece for black-aligned Commander decks focused on creature manipulation.
